Lychee (Litchi chinensis)

Lychee does best with good seasonal temperature changes – a moderately cool winter, followed by a temperate spring and warm summer months.

My climate is a little too warm to be ideal for Lychee, but with its great taste and the seductive red fruit against waxy dark green leaves, I am prepared to give this a chance.

I have had several attempts at establishing a lychee tree. In my growing conditions, lychee trees do not like direct sunlight. I am only starting to see results now that I have a small tree growing in a shaded corner of the garden between clumps of Bamboo.

It looks like I am on my way to having a good result with this, thanks to seeing my neighbor grow a strong healthy lychee plant directly under the spreading branches of a large acacia tree.
